Bought a Western Digital MyBook World Edition 500GB NAS hard drive. Connected it to my LAN, enabled ssh access as per the excellent guides available on “hacking” WD wiki and even enabled smart_spindown script to keep it quiet and consume less power when not in use…
I copied a lot of backup data to it (I use SyncBackSE for backup) but then I suddenly could not access it from my new Vista notebook. It was very very slow, rebooting Vista and NAS didn’t help and to make it interesting, at the same time, that Vista accesses were so slow it hung Explorer and cmd shell, XP notebooks were writing/reading the files just fine.
After some googling (it is verb, right?
, I found this article, which led me to changing the network security policy (basically you change network policy to “Send LM & NTML – use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”). What is puzzling though, is that it worked for a couple of days (I copied over 50GB of data to it!!), and then Vista decided it is enough. It works again, and that’s what matters.
One note on MBWE though: transfers are slow (2-3 MB/s). But, given that my notebooks are on WLAN, it is fast enough.
